We all know Ibiza’s reputation as a haven for clubbing and debaucherous behaviour, but did you know that the world’s party island has been shifting towards sustainability in recent years? Six Senses Ibiza is following the trend with the opening of the first sustainable BREEAM-certified resort and residential community in the Balearics.
Six Senses Ibiza is set in Xarraca Bay, at the northern tip of the island, with 116 guest accommodations, townhouses, pool suites and beachfront caves. Some suites have even been built into the cliffs to give you a feeling of being more connected with nature.
In terms of its eco-friendliness, up to 51% of the resort’s energy needs are met by renewable sources and all suites are stocked with sustainable bathroom amenities and yoga mats.
Possibly the most impressive part of the Six Senses Ibiza resort is that it has its own farm where guests can take part in growing their own food! The 400-year old olive press and farm supplies food to the kitchens at the resort restaurants and cafes. Expect to see guest chefs dropping in to share their culinary secrets and host pop-up events.
The resort also works with local partners such as the Ibiza Preservation Fund, which helps to fund biodiversity projects both on land and at sea. It has also vowed to contribute 0.5% of its operating revenue to the Six Senses Sustainability Fund, which supports local foundations that “share the same values in terms of environmental and community responsibility.”
Other experiences that guests can take part in include meditations, juice cleanses and art therapy. There’s also a seafront yoga deck and an outdoor boxing ring and for the really adventurous guests, there’s cliff-jumping and underwater guided meditations.
It’s great that holiday destinations like Ibiza are looking to embed sustainability into their practices – with any luck, it will inspire other organisations to do the same. After all, one of the main draws of island vacations are the crystal-clear oceans and clean beaches; no one wants to be wading through plastic cups and other waste on their morning walks.
