The post Good News: 2022’s Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen Lists Are Out appeared first on 8Shades.

]]>
If you’re a health-conscious eater, you’ve most likely heard of the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen. Published every year since 2004 by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen, advises us which fruits and veggies we should buy organic (meaning, grown without pesticides), and which are safest to buy conventional (meaning, grown with pesticides).

Updated for 2022, here are the latest recommendations:

Dirty Dozen 2022

 1. Strawberries
 2. Spinach
 3. Kale, collard, and mustard greens
 4. Nectarines
 5. Apples
 6. Grapes
 7. Bell and hot peppers
 8. Cherries
 9. Peaches
 10. Pears
 11. Celery
 12. Tomatoes

*no new additions to the 2022 list

Clean Fifteen 2022

 1. Avocados
 2. Sweet corn
 3. Pineapple
 4. Onions
 5. Papaya
 6. Sweet peas (frozen)
 7. Asparagus
 8. Honeydew melon
 9. Kiwi
 10. Cabbage
 11. Mushrooms
 12. Cantaloupe
 13. Mangoes
 14. Watermelon
 15. Sweet potatoes

*items in bold are new to the 2022 list

So what does this mean? The Dirty Dozen basically refers to the 12 fruits and veggies that contain the highest pesticide levels, even after thorough washing. If you’re a strawberry lover, be sure to buy them organic!

On the other hand, the Clean Fifteen list is made up of fruits and vegetables that the EWG found contains the lowest amount of pesticides, even when not organic. So, feel free to shop from the normal section of the supermarket for these items.

Why are pesticides bad?

Pesticides are not only harmful to humans, which can lead to things like skin irritation, birth defects and hormonal disruption – it’s bad for the environment too, by seeping into soil, poisoning other wildlife and affecting groundwater and other ecosystems.

Help do your part in protecting the planet by shopping responsibly on your next trip to the supermarket – remember, every little green step counts!

Do You Have Pandemic Fatigue? https://www.8shades.com/pandemic-fatigue/ Tue, 29 Mar 2022 15:10:17 +0000 https://www.8shades.com/?p=10881 Recognising pandemic fatigue is the first step towards improving your mental health – here are six ways to do just that!

The post Do You Have Pandemic Fatigue? appeared first on 8Shades.

]]>
Much has been written about the effects of COVID-19 on the body, with symptoms lasting up to weeks or months after exposure. One thing that has been less in the spotlight, but is just as relevant whether you test positive or not, is pandemic fatigue.

As Hong Kong continues to face lockdowns and uncertainty surrounding the virus – especially when the rest of the world has already opened up – stress and anxiety levels continues to rise. After more than two years of Covid-19, pandemic fatigue is definitely a real struggle.

See also: 10 Things To Do During Lockdown

Recognising pandemic fatigue is the first step towards better mental health, and we’ve rounded up some simple steps to combat those feelings of hopelessness below:

1. Tune Out or switch off

Pexels

Enough with the doom-scrolling on your phone or leaving the news on as background noise, which can leave you feeling anxious, stressed, and just overwhelmed. The solution? Take a break. Put your phone down and turn the television off – don’t feel guilty about not staying up to date with what’s happening in the world. Channel your attention to something more productive or simply something that brings you joy and comfort.

2. Say ‘Ommm…’

Meditation can also still your mind, and setting aside half an hour per day to take a deep breath and clear your mind can do wonders for alleviating stress by slowing down your heart rate and setting it to rest mode. Meditating also allows you to reflect on your thoughts and be in touch with your feelings, which can help you better control your emotions and improve your mental health.

3. Self-care

The pandemic has disrupted our daily routines, no doubt, but you can put it back in order with something as simple as a hot bath (or shower). Practicing self-care in all its forms can help bring down your stress levels, and gives you the opportunity to “start fresh.” It also signals to your mind and body that there’s more to life than work, Covid-19 and all the world’s bad news.

4. Stay Active

Unsplash

Feeling sluggish? Don’t let pandemic fatigue get the best of you. Although most of us are working from home these days, it’s not an excuse to stay glued to the bed or couch.

Set aside time for your regular physical activities, and if you didn’t have any healthy habits pre-pandemic, now would be a great time to start! It doesn’t need to be a strenuous workout either – simply pacing around your living room to get some steps in will do, or pop downstairs for a quick walk around your neighbourhood.

5. Become a Plant Parent

If you missed this trend during the initial days of the pandemic, maybe it’s time you considered it. Gardening has become a form of self-care for a lot of people during Covid-19, due to its ability to improve their well-being, lower stress levels, and add to their physical activity. The influx of flora into our living spaces also allows you to connect with Mother Nature without leaving your home and can connect you with other plant parents on social media.

6. Eat Healthy

We recently shared a list of foods to nourish your body and help recover from COVID-19 faster – but you don’t have to wait to test positive to start eating healthy! Prevent illness by incorporating more greens, nuts, and grains into your diet.

Drink as many fluids as you can, while staying away from overly processed, deep-fried, or sinfully sweet food. Eating better and eating right will help you fight pandemic fatigue, not to mention keep your body in tip-top condition, too.

Dealing with the pandemic – especially while Hong Kong has been in the grips of its fifth wave – has certainly been challenging, both mentally and emotionally.

It’s no surprise that a growing number of the city’s residents are experiencing post-traumatic stress and anxiety, with mental health organisations and counselling groups reporting an increase of up to 60 percent in the number of clients and calls for help, with an estimated more than 70 percent of inquiries related to Covid-19.

Having feelings of anxiety aren’t unique to the pandemic, however. A 2019 study done by the World Health Organization and MindHK showed that more than 61% of Hongkongers are considered to have “poor mental well-being and unsatisfactory mental health”, due to various factors, such as work-related stress and financial difficulties, social stigma, and a shortage of professional mental health support.

Symptoms of anxiety

The symptoms of anxiety include feelings of fear, tension, excessive worry about everyday problems, heart palpitations or an elevated heart rate, difficulty concentrating, and muscle tension, including chest tightness. It’s important to remember that anxiety can affect anyone at any age. It’s also a common condition that affects millions of people around the world.

Thankfully, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Research has shown that anxiety sufferers may be able to alleviate symptoms through their diet.

The Anti-anxiety Food Solution
Source: The Anti-anxiety Food Solution

In her book, The Anti-anxiety Food Solution: How the Foods You Eat Can Help You Calm Your Anxious Mind, Improve Your Mood & End Cravings, Trudy Scott delves into the different types of foods we eat and how these impact our brain chemistry and emotions. We may not realise how much our moods, thoughts and feelings can be impacted by our diets until we make a change. What and when you eat can make a big difference between feeling anxious and staying calm.

Food as medicine

According to Scott, the biggest factor in maintaining optimal mental health is eating real, whole, good-quality food. This means plenty of vegetables and fruit and staying away from processed food, sweetened desserts, fried foods, refined grains and high-fat dairy products.

She provides a step-by-step approach in eliminating foods that may be affecting our emotional state, including gluten, dairy and grains, keeping a food diary, and assessing every two weeks if there are changes in how we feel.

A look into some evidence-based studies reveal eight plant-based superfoods that you can start eating now to ease feelings of anxiety and lift your mood.

Dark Chocolate

A 2014 study found that 40g of dark chocolate helped reduce perceived stress in female students, and there are several studies that suggest that cocoa improves mood.

Green Tea

Green tea contains an amino acid called theanine which has calming effects and may increase the production of serotonin and dopamine. A 2017 study found that 200mg of theanine offered improved feelings of calm and relaxation.

Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts, mushrooms and soybeans are all high in selenium, which reduce inflammation levels that are heightened when someone is suffering from anxiety.

Chamomile tea

Another tea with anti-inflammatory benefits, flavonoids in chamomile tea offer a soothing effect, and a 2010 study showed significantly reduced symptoms of anxiety in those that received up to 1,500mg of chamomile extract per day.

Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seeds and bananas are potassium-rich, which may reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety by regulating electrolyte balance and managing blood pressure.

Turmeric

Adding turmeric in food or tea may help reduce anxiety as it contains curcumin, which reduces inflammation and oxidative stress. A 2015 study found that curcumin helped relieve anxiety and increase DHA in obese adults.

Plant-based Yogurt

Plant-based yogurt contains healthy bacteria or probiotics, which may improve mood and reduce social anxiety, as shown in this 2015 study.

Chia Seeds

A 2015 review lists the nutritional and therapeutic effects of Chia seeds, which include help with digestion, boosting immunity, and your emotional health too. It is a great source of Omega-3, which helps prevent heart disease, controls eczema and arthritis, and a host of other conditions.

Mindish: Mental Health Tips To Cope With Hong Kong’s Fifth Wave https://www.8shades.com/mental-health-tips-fifth-wave-hong-kong/ Wed, 23 Mar 2022 01:00:00 +0000 https://www.8shades.com/?p=10820 Feeling stressed and anxious? We asked eight practitioners from holistic wellness centre, Mindish, to share their best tips for coping with Hong Kong's fifth wave.

The post Mindish: Mental Health Tips To Cope With Hong Kong’s Fifth Wave appeared first on 8Shades.

]]>
If there’s one good thing that came out of the pandemic, it’s that mental health has finally become mainstream and a common topic of conversation. It wasn’t too long ago that admitting to mental health issues and/or seeing a counsellor or therapist meant that you were weak or unable to handle the stresses of everyday life, especially in Asia.

Nowadays, mental health is seen as something that everyone should pay attention to and work on, not unlike their physical health. The idea is, just as you would exercise your body to become fitter and stronger, our minds, too, deserve the same treatment.

Enter Mindish, a new holistic wellness centre in the heart of Central that offers integrated therapy and counselling, meditation and exclusive events for its “community of health and happiness.”

With stress and anxiety levels at all-time highs in Hong Kong thanks to the fifth wave (and all its fluctuating restrictions), we reached out to eight therapists at Mindish to get out their personal tips on how to cope:

Franziska von Kleist, Life Coach

Franziska von Kleist

Whenever I feel anxious, nervous or helpless, I connect with friends and family to share my innermost thoughts and worries. Being listened to is still my #1 remedy against anxiety, and in doing so, I often discover thoughts and ideas within me that can shift my mood from helpless to empowered.

My second tip for times like these is to avoid reading too much news, which tends to be negative. Instead, go for a walk, swim, yoga or meditation session to keep your mind positive!

Denise Tam, Nutritionist

Healthy food and lifestyle choices can carry us through stressful periods of life. During this fifth wave in Hong Kong, focus on foods with nutrients that will boost your immune system, such as Vitamin C in fruits and vegetables, zinc in nuts and seeds, as well as Vitamin D – preferably in the form of supplements due to poor conversion in the body.

Because SARS-CoV-2 creates an inflammatory response, try to decrease inflammation by avoiding sugars and processed foods whilst including more anti-inflammatory spices and herbs such as turmeric and ginger.

Thanks to the ongoing pandemic, chronic stress and isolation are two major risk factors for mental illness. The key is to shift the focus from what you can’t control to things that you can – these small differences can have a huge impact on your physical and emotional health.

Aside from seeking professional help and support for your mental health, consider implementing the following mood-boosting activities into your daily routine:

 • Stay connected with family and friends during these tough times
 • Take good care of your body and prioritise self-care, particularly sleep
 • Nurture yourself by practicing mindfulness to stay in the present moment, eating a well-balanced diet and exercise
 • Limit your time on social media and structure your days with routines and rituals
 • Help others in need – you’ll feel better about yourself too!

Sometimes, stress and anxiety show up as a physical sensation but we aren’t really aware of where it’s coming from. These feelings can make us feel powerless and out of control. Instead, ask yourself what can be controlled and what’s in your power to do?

Think about the worst case scenario and instead of worrying, start preparing for it. This method helps you understand where the stress and anxiety is coming from and creates strategies instead to put you back in control again.

Elena Kisel, Counsellor and Clinical Hypnotherapist

One effective strategy for tolerating distress is known as the ‘Urge Surfing’ technique. This practice is widely used in the treatment of addictions and helps people reduce or “ride out” difficult emotions before they become unbearable.

To start, imagine a surfer riding a wave of an urge. Waves can be strong and powerful, but eventually they fall. What makes anxiety and worry escalate is trying to avoid a thought or feeling, which often becomes even more intense and harder to tolerate. Instead, “urge surfing” can help you experience the feelings without judgement or pushing them away too soon.

Ultimately, experiencing the discomfort or uncertainty caused by the pandemic and not running away from it can be truly liberating.

Jerome de Clarens, Life Coach

Jerome de Clarens

To cope with stress, first externalise everything by writing down all the negative things you are experiencing at the moment. This is very important to become aware of and take responsibility for what is happening.

As a life coach, I always focus on moving forward and taking things positively, so now that we know what is going “wrong”, it’s time to move forward. Think about how you can restart the machine of positivity within you – are there things that you’ve always wanted to do but never did?

Now could be a great time to sharpen your three-month vision, including the professional and personal objectives you have in life. How will you feel once you have achieved these goals? By making a plan, you’ll know where you’re going, and that alone can change your entire perception of the current situation.

All the uncertainty about what will happen or not happen can cause feelings of frustration, anger, sadness and anxiety. We may not be able to control what is happening, but we can always choose our response. So, concentrate on things you can do:

 • Take obvious precautions – wear masks, wash your hands, take your supplements, eat wisely, control how much you relax and sleep.
 • Assess your consumption of social media and news and how this makes you feel – do you need to know everything?
 • Get out into nature – you get your dose of Vitamin D and exercise to help with your mental and physical well being.
 • Feel safe – this is different and very personal for everyone. If you feel uncomfortable in crowded spaces, then limit this.
 • Practice mindfulness – stay in the present moment as much as you can. Worrying about what is currently happening, what may happen and what hasn’t yet happened is overwhelming. When this creeps up on you, concentrate on your breath. Breathe in, deeply and slowly into your belly and then breathe out slowly. Repeat this for 5-10 breaths to reset the mind and bring you to the present moment.

There’s a lot of advice that one can give during this time, and I know that the brilliant therapists and coaches here at Mindish certainly have shared many crucial strategies and effective tips. I just have one word of advice here: acceptance.

There is no need – on top of everything else – to be anxious that we are anxious. Our emotions are no sign that our lives have gone wrong – merely that we are human. We should spare ourselves the burden of loneliness.

We are far from the only ones with this problem. We may suffer alone, but we can at least hold out our arms to our similarly afraid, uncertain, and above all else, anxious friends and family, as if to say, in the kindest way possible: ‘I see you…’

Covid-19 Positive? 6 Tips To Nourish Your Body & Recover Faster https://www.8shades.com/covid-19-positive-6-tips-nourish-body-recover-faster/ Tue, 22 Mar 2022 01:00:00 +0000 https://www.8shades.com/?p=10709 As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to batter Hong Kong, learn how to recover faster by maintaining a healthy diet.

The post Covid-19 Positive? 6 Tips To Nourish Your Body & Recover Faster appeared first on 8Shades.

]]>
With Omicron and the fifth wave currently battering Hong Kong, it may just be a matter of time before we get it. So, what do you do if you (eek) test positive? Well, first things first: self-isolate, report it to the government through its online platform, and of course, get plenty of rest and fluids.

Source: Unsplash

Another thing you should do is maintain a healthy diet. Not only does this help fight this disease more effectively, it also helps sustain your energy levels, reduce anxiety, and boost your mood.

A disclaimer: Covid-19 symptoms can differ from one person to another, and what works for one person might not work for others. Be sure to consult your doctor for medical advice. However, as a general rule, here are some ways to nourish your body if you do test positive for Covid-19:

1. Hydrate

Pexels
Source: Pexels

Whenever we get sick, the first thing anyone will tell you is to drink more fluids. Of course, the simplest way would be to have eight glasses of water a day to help flush out any toxins.

If you’re not a fan of plain water, other options include coconut water, tea with honey, fresh juices, and even electrolyte drinks. Just avoid overly sugary and artificially coloured drinks as too much of the sweet stuff can weaken your immune system.

Another one to consider: good ‘ol chicken soup. Yes, it’s cliché, but it works. A hot bowl of chicken broth hydrates and provides you with protein and other nutrients that your body needs.

2. Eat your veggies

Unsplash
Source: Unsplash

Did you know? Coronavirus causes inflammation, which is a signal for your body to start fighting off the virus. While this is good, unchecked inflammation can be counterproductive, so, it’s essential to eat anti-inflammatory foods to help support your immune system.

Incorporate leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, or collard greens into your diet. Add in some tomatoes and olive oil, and you have the makings of a great salad. Supplement it with some fruits like strawberries, cherries, and oranges, and sprinkle on a few of your favourite nuts and seeds for an added dose of protein.

3. Get grainy

Whole grains - pexels

Another food that combats inflammation are whole grains – think oats, brown rice, whole wheat bread, or even popcorn! A 2018 clinical study has shown that people who ate whole grains significantly lowered their inflammation markers. Plus, they’re an excellent source of energy!

4. Bring on the (good) bacteria

Unsplash
Source: Unsplash

Probiotics are also a great way to help boost your immune system. Suffering from gastro issues thanks to Covid-19? Items such as yogurt, sauerkraut or kombucha will aid your digestive system by reducing gas, bloating, and fighting against diarrhoea. Studies have also shown that these mighty microbes can also impact lung function positively.

5. Sip on smoothies

Smoothie

Looking for a more efficient way of consuming a healthy diet? Try a smoothie! You’ll be combining those much-needed fluids, oats, berries, veggies, and yogurt into an all-in-one drink. And it’s more than just being healthy, it will also provide you with the calories you need to keep up the energy in fighting off Covid-19.

6. Supplement with Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids

Foods that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can also help reduce inflammation while building a layer of antiviral protection across your cells. So, don’t skimp out on fish such as salmon, tuna, cod or sardines. Edamame, walnuts, chia seeds and flax seeds are also a good source of Omega-3s.

Testing positive for Covid-19 doesn’t have to be the end of the world. In fact, why not see it as an opportunity to get your health back in order by resetting and rebooting your body with the help of some nourishing foods? For everyone out there who’s currently recovering from Covid-19, get well soon!

World Sleep Day: 5 Tips On Getting Better Sleep https://www.8shades.com/world-sleep-day-5-tips-on-getting-better-sleep/ Fri, 18 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.8shades.com/?p=10622 Looking to sleep better through these uncharted times? This World Sleep Day (March 18), take heed of our top tips on how to improve your quality of sleep.

The post World Sleep Day: 5 Tips On Getting Better Sleep appeared first on 8Shades.

]]>
Since the World Health Organisation’s declaration of a global pandemic in March 2020, its ripple effects have touched almost all aspects of human existence – from how we work, to how we eat, to how we interact with others, and most certainly, how we sleep.

In light of this, World Sleep Day, which falls this year on Friday 18 March, is a reminder of sleep’s critical role in our lives. This year’s theme is Quality Sleep, Sound Mind, Happy World, and we couldn’t agree more on the connection between good sleep and happiness.

“World Sleep Day is designed to raise awareness of sleep as a human privilege that is often compromised by the habits of modern life.”

World Sleep Day organisers

Whether you’ve had trouble sleeping before the pandemic or are learning to sleep better in these uncharted times, here are a few tips that can help you get better shut-eye:

1. Design your sleep routine

It’s natural to think that a good night’s rest starts when your head hits the pillow but in reality, quality sleep starts in the lead-up to bedtime. “Simply put, good sleep habits can cause good sleep quality,” explains Dr. Liborio Parrino, Associate Professor of Neurology at Parma University, Italy.

Establishing a calming pre-sleep routine, with practices like yoga, meditation or reading, and habits like not eating or drinking too close to your bedtime, can help your body to recognise the end of the day, marking that it’s time to sleep.

At the same time, don’t stress out too much over your sleep routine – it’s important to identify what factors can disrupt your sleep or interfere with preparing your mind and body to rest.

2. Create an optimal sleep environment

Source: Unsplash

Investigate what you need to cultivate a beneficial sleep environment. “It’s possible to eliminate many minor sleep problems by creating a comfortable sleep environment,” says Dr. Lawrence J. Epstein of the Sleep Medicine Division at Harvard Medical School.

He cites taking steps such as regulating the temperature, dimming the lights close to bedtime and making sure the room is dark when you sleep, finding a comfortable bed and mattress, blocking distracting noise, keeping tech and gadgets away from the bed, and avoiding using your bed for non-sleep or intimacy-related activities.

3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Source: Unsplash

It’s widely acknowledged that a healthy lifestyle has invariable benefits on general wellness, so it makes sense that staying healthy is also linked to good sleep. Physically keeping an adequate balance of nutrition, exercise, and moderated alcohol ingestion and tobacco use will serve you well in the long run.

When it comes to mental health, working through stress or anxiety with a counsellor or therapist can also be keys to long term good sleep.

4. Practice mindful tech consumption

Source: Unsplash

With the portability of smart devices, it’s all too easy to answer emails from the bed and scroll social media endlessly. According to the Sleep Foundation, using electronic devices for long periods of the day can negatively impact sleep duration and deficiency, not to mention the inclination to doomscroll.

For better sleep health and mental health, you may want to keep work-related activities and charging devices away from your bed or bedroom. You can also set nighttime mode to activate in the evening so that displays are easier on the eyes before bedtime.

5. Make sleep fun, luxurious and exciting

Source: Unsplash

Whether that means spritzing your bed with a mood-boosting room spray, fluffing your pillows, lighting a candle, or slipping into a silky robe and under an eye mask, integrating little ways to make sleep something to look forward to can create a positive anticipation of sleep time.

Say Cheers To These Natural, Bio and Organic Red Wines https://www.8shades.com/natural-bio-organic-red-wines/ Wed, 23 Feb 2022 02:35:16 +0000 https://www.8shades.com/?p=9740 Can red wine prevent COVID-19? Say cheers to these natural, bio and organic red wines that, at the very least, can take the edge off.

Between all the new restrictions and limited opportunities to maintain regular routines or socialise, the current situation in Hong Kong can be a little daunting, to say the least. If you find yourself coping with a glass or two of wine at home, don’t feel bad. In fact, there may be even more reason to raise that glass.

Can red wine prevent Covid?

A recent study published by Frontiers of Nutrition analysed data from nearly 500,000 U.K. residents and found that subjects who drank one to two glasses of red wine per day had a 10-17% lower chance of COVID-19 risk compared to non-drinkers. The findings even held true for white wine and champagne drinkers, though at a lower rate of 7-8%.

Subjects who drank one to two glasses of red wine per day had a 10-17% lower chance of COVID-19 risk compared to non-drinkers.

Frontiers of Nutrition study

While factors related to lifestyle, diet, and vaccination rates could be at play, the study suggests that there are benefits to consuming red wine in comparison to other alcoholic beverages for reducing your risk of catching Covid-19.

The study attributes this to the polyphenols or the compounds found in red wine that are rich in antioxidants, which can inhibit certain respiratory conditions while also managing blood pressure and promoting blood circulation. Polyphenol content can also reduce chronic inflammation, which is a risk for heart diseases.

So, along with those long-shelf life vegetables, now could be as good a time as any to restock the wine fridge too. If you’re looking to try a few new wines that are as good for the planet as they are for your health, here are some excellent picks for natural, bio and organic red wines in Hong Kong:

Domaine de Michelet, Buzet, France

Source: Bluenote Wine

Grown on 16 hectares of organic vineyard, Domaine de Michelet is a family-run estate in Buzon, France that was first established in 1989. The Rousille family are dedicated to the work of reclaiming the vines, working the soil and using ancestral techniques of winegrowing, integrated with modern methodologies to produce their natural vegan wine.

This aromatic, medium body cabernet franc merlot blend is free of products of animal origins and sulphites, and is grown with practices that are bee friendly – which indicates a healthy environment surrounding the vines.

Garage Project Fairy Bread Red

Source: The Bottle Shop

The folks at Garage Project in New Zealand are as serious about their brewing and winemaking as they are about sustainability and it shows in their environmental practices. Aware of the footprint the brewing industry has on the environment, GP seeks to offset its carbon emissions 100%, uses only renewable supplied electricity, repurposes its grain from its brewing to local farmers, and even encourages employees to bike to work with stipends for purchasing a bike or scooter.

Their Fairy Bread Red is a blend of grapes from the Nelson region, thoughtfully grown by Kindeli Natural Wines, which prides itself in farming organically and holistically. Tart, fruity and fun, this juicy red wine will be a party pleaser, even if it’s a party of one at home (thanks, COVID).

Jean Foillard Elles Madine & Agnes 2018

Source: Wine Guru

Founded in 1980, the Foillard vineyard in Morgon, France has been carefully steered toward more sustainable and natural winemaking processes with the guidance of owner Jean Foillard. The move, which allows for the true character of the region to shine through, also demonstrates a sensitivity and respect for the vines, which Foillard further facilitates through manual harvest and traditional vinification.

This 100% Gamay blend is particularly special as it is produced by Foillard’s wife, Agnes, and her friend Nadine. Floral with a nice balance of black fruit and earthy notes, Beaujolais enthusiasts will appreciate how versatile this bottle can be with a range of dishes.

Guthrie Family Farms Chateau Guthrie Red Blend

Source: Crushed

If you believe in less being more, conservation, composting and helping others, you’ll appreciate the work of Guthrie Family Farms, and the wine that comes out of it. Grown in Sonoma, California, their farm is built on the premise that organic is conventional, and sometimes doing things the old-fashioned way is best.

This means conserving water, organic farming and composting where possible – not to mention capsule-free bottles and corks made of repurposed sugar cane (which are carbon negative too!). Balanced yet interesting, this California red blend has inviting notes of strawberry, cherry and oak.

Alex Foillard Côte de Brouilly 2018 – Magnum

Source: La Cabane

Winemaker Alex Foillard has impressed many with his own natural wines, following in the footsteps of his father, Jean Foillard. Employing the same passion for sustainable farming and low intervention winemaking he shares with his father, the younger Foillard tries to make his wines with as little intervention as possible, using only natural yeasts, no additives and minimal sulphites. Hailed as powerful, thrilling and pure, this Foillard Gamay displays Alex’s own masterful ability to cultivate incredible wine.

Lammidia Rosh 2020

Source: Wine Guru

Anchored on the principles of simplicity and spontaneity, winemakers Davide and Marco are true believers in the purity of good grapes. With zero reliance on sulphites, additives, clarifying agents or filtration, the process of perfecting their wine can be challenging but it also makes their craftsmanship distinct.

The residual lees and grape skins are indicative of the natural and genuine processes they use to make their bottles, like this juicy montepulciano. Light with mouth-watering acids, the touch of trebbiano adds a dimension of freshness one can’t deny.

Alex Craighead Wines DON Nelson Pinot Noir 2020 from La Cabane

Source: La Cabane

The organic vineyards of Alex Craighead have helped to put New Zealand wine on the map, and particularly Craighead’s progressive approach to winemaking, through manual harvest, biodynamic farming and using only organically farmed grapes.

Before the grapes ripen, sheep are invited to the vineyards to mow the grass and eat the leaves around the young grapes, allowing for greater airflow and lowering potential rot. Crafted with zero additives, this pinot noir serves up berry, cherry and spices with a slight earthy and vegetal nose.
